As described in other posts it could be extremely windy and with the wind there can be many surprises. Wind can pick up so strong that small rocks can fly around especially lava rocks as they are not as heavy as normal rocks. This is one thing that you should consider when you hire a car. We had full coverage insurance from a 3rd party for a year and use it worldwide. That is one tip of how you can protect yourself against the weather in Iceland.
Other things that can happen are sudden snowstorms in winter that come and go in a split second. We would say this - if you don't like the weather then wait 5 minutes and you might not like it even more or maybe it will change and will be good again.
Things like running after work might be considered as an extreme sport. We saw a group of runners and all of them had high wiz jackets on - that is considered as normal nowadays but there you might need a flashing light and a whistle attached to it in case you are blown away. OK, that might not sound nice but could be true. Especially when hale is coming in your face and you don't have a windshield. Oh yes we are still talking about running. This is what we saw and we were amazed how determined people are and I guess you have to be - otherwise you would quit running quite soon.
This should not stop you to go to Iceland as these moments come and go. You will start to enjoy them and will be much more thankful for good weather when it's treating you. And remember - I am talking only about winter. Summer tends to be quite OK but the summers are not very long.
