For us, this was one of the must-see places in Iceland and there is a reason for it. This Lutheran parish church is the highlight or Reykjavik as it's one of the highest structures in Iceland reaching 74.5 meters / 244.4 feet and it has been designed to resemble the trap-rocks, mountains, and glaciers of Iceland's landscape. You might be asking what does the name ''Hallgrímskirkja'' mean in English if there is a meaning at all? It turns out that the church was named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrimur Petursson, Author of the Passion Hymns.
Inside we enjoyed the pipe organ music. We are not experts in this at all but those who are might be intrigued to know that there are 102 ranks, 72 stops, and 5275 pipes. That's a lot of pipes!! It is 15 meters / 49 feet tall and weighs 25 metric tons. The church is also used as an observation tower. You can take a lift up to the top of the church and from the viewing deck can see Reykjavik and the surrounding mountains. Would you like to have your wedding ceremony to be held there? That would be impressive! The statue of explorer Leif Erikson in front of the church was a gift from the United States in honor of the 1930 Althing Millennial Festival, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Thingvellir / Þingvellir in 930 AD. Location in the MAP.
