San Francisco vs Cobh

Updated: May 8, 2020

Cobh, Ireland

San Francisco, California Recently I was scrolling through Instagram in the hope to find another great travel destination and suddenly I look at the photo of Cobh, Ireland with its colorful houses and the cathedral at the background and I am starting to think: This place seems a bit familiar – have I been there already? At that moment I did not know about Cobh in Ireland and I did not remember the St. Colman’s Cathedral. We did go through states and in my memory, those colorful houses reminded the Painted Ladies in San Francisco. After a little bit of research I got both places on the map and indeed – they are very similar in the way how the houses are positioned and the little park and then the city view in the background. Yes, the city view is much different in each city taking into account that Cobh, previously known as Queenstown and back in 1750 known as Cove Village has a rich history. On the other hand, San Francisco based on documented records was first visited by European back in 1769. Then because of the California Gold Rush, the city’s population grew from 1 000 in 1848 up to 25 000 in 1849 when it was no longer just a small settlement. If we compare Cobh in Ireland then it’s population back in 2016 was just 12 800. Now you can see how quickly one event such as The California Gold Rush can change the history and cities.

It’s still interesting that both of these cities are so different and at the same time there is this one place that is a signature place in both of them. Are these signatures a bit similar? And if you would have to vote for the best view then which one would you chose?

I hope that this post inspired you to visit Cobh in Ireland or San Francisco in California or maybe both. Looking forward to seeing your comments and votes!
