As we all know then health is the most important thing we have. With this, I mean Mental Health and Physical health. It is important to maintain this at a good level and travel can be a great solution.
The Mental Health Benefits of Travelling
To maintain mental health it’s important to keep your brain active and alert. This can prevent many diseases including dementia and many stress-related illnesses including anxiety. I am not going to go in much detail and will not make a list of all these diseases here, but instead will tell you why travelling is good for you.
One of the things I already mentioned before is that you want your brain to be active. Why? Many people, young and especially older people, want to have an easy life. That means that they would not exercise their brain on a day to day bases. This includes easy 9 – 5 work with no challenges or regular passive income, easy to make food or maybe regular orders of fast food. Also recipes you do over and over again and again where there is no challenge to your brain.
A typical day for someone who does not exercise their brain would be going something like this: You wake up, quick breakfast at home or fast food on the way, then work full day a job you are very comfortable with and it is easy to do and does not make you think too much, then you get back home and on the way back you grab something you can easily make at home or just order your dinner in. You have your meal and comfort at home, TV or Netflix on and then it is The End of the day. But what no one is telling to you is that this is The End of Your Brain as well. And here is the issue.
Most people are not willing to think!
There is even a book written in relation to this subject and it’s called ‘’Don’t Make Me Think’’ by Steve Krug. There are only about 5% of people that are willing to exercise their brain and are looking for challenges. These are people that make big things happen. Then there is a great percent that is doing mentally challenging work on a day to day bases or challenging their brain with things like strategic games, board games or Sudoku. And finally, there are people that are just floating around and are stuck in a routine. I have to say that those who have mentally challenging work can be stuck in a routine as well and it’s great if it works, but the main thing is to keep your brain alert and active even when you get older. So one of the solutions is travelling. This requires to get out of your comfort zone and think.
There are different types of travelling and during these years, that have been full of adventures, I have met many people and I have been speaking about many different types of travel. What I have noticed is that many people, especially in Great Britain, like to return to places where they have been before and they do it over and over again. Every year the same place, the same hotel the same swimming pool and so on… It’s nice if you have found a place you like, but this kind of travelling does not exercise your brain. It is the same as getting in your car or bus and going away to a spa resort you already know, stay there for 10 days or so and then you just come back. The only difference is that in some cases you have to take an aeroplane or a ship to get to that place you really like as it is overseas. This is EASY. And people love easy. So I would strongly encourage every one of you to go to a different destination each time. It will make you do some research, then take different steps to get there and it will give you different experiences. Different scenery, city, Air BNB or hotel. All of this will make your brain to think! That is the key. If you are making a road trip then even better – you have to plan multiple days and you would have to think about places you want to see or things you want to do and so on. If you are travelling in a group then you would have to have discussions within a group about the plan for each day and so on. Now if we think about this – what is better – just do the things that are easy and get the same result or experience OR take up a challenge and do something new, get new experiences, create new memories and have mentally exercised brain? I would go for the second option even if it is harder to do, the benefits are so much better. Let me know your thoughts in a comment and keep reading.
The Physical Health Benefits of Travelling
This should be quite clear to all of us. And Yes - it is that easy! When we travel we do move our body and we have more exercises even if you don’t really do them. Every time you go up and down the stairs or stretch to grab something or get in the pool or sea to have a swim etc. It all counts and your body will say thanks to you for every minute you are out and about. Plus the benefits of fresh air. The oxygen that is delivered to your brain. It is advised to have at least one time per day when you do something that makes you breath faster because of the exercise you are doing. It can be as simple as fast walking, climbing stairs or a mountain. Ha - whatever is around. Little runabout is a great way how to improve your general health. And believe me – lack of exercise can and most likely will damage your mental health. It all needs to be in balance and those of us who will find that balance will live longer, happier and healthier lives!
I wish you to take the above advice and apply it in your life! You should soon see that yourself – things around you will only improve. Even if you don’t see your life changing immediately, then others around you might see the difference and you will see that you are better off at a later stage of your life! If you have any questions or you think you want me to expand a bit on one or the other things then feel free to leave a message in comments or just drop me a line!
